Instructions:
As a manager for Centennial Home Mortgage, Inc. (NYSE: CHM), you are in charge of a diversified team of five employees. You learn that the CHM mistakenly disclosed the personal information of up to 14 million US consumers earlier this year. The theft exposed sensitive information such as social security numbers, credit card numbers, birthdays, addresses, and, in certain cases, driver’s license numbers.
You inform your immediate supervisor, whose spouse is the Human Resources Officer, and she assures you that she will handle the situation. However, weeks pass with no communication from business executives.
Unbeknownst to you, just days after the breach was detected, some of the company’s top executives sold over $1.8 million worth of stock. The public was not made aware of the breach for over six weeks. After the hack was revealed, CCU’s stock dropped by more than 30% in just seven days.
Your boss reports back to you, stating unequivocally that you must deliver unfavorable, career-damaging appraisals to three of your five employees. Your boss mentions that “some” employees you supervise are disliked by the regional manager, and that it is critical that they bear responsibility for the security breach and public relations disaster. If you reject, you may suffer repercussions such as a demotion or the loss of your job.
