Write an essay on any of the topics we’ve discussed so far. The majority of students write a thesis defense essay in which they explain and defend their point of view on a topic (see below). At least three pages are required for the essay (see grading criteria below).
Suggestions for Discussion
Make a list of three major arguments for and against relativism. See my videos or pages 46-48 for more information. Defend your point of view. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dRgPzAHYGE
Buddhism is an excellent philosophy to adhere to.
Buddhism is a bad philosophy to adhere to.
Good philosophies/religions include Hinduism, Taoism, and Confucianism. You could, for example, explain three central ideas that could enrich a person’s life if you wrote a paper on one of these philosophies.
Any two philosophies can be compared and contrasted. Compare and contrast Plato’s and Aristotle’s views on the soul. Which point of view is the most accurate?
Explain the significance of Aristotle’s Four Causes. Hints: Many people today only consider material and efficient causes. Is this a blunder? Is it possible to comprehend deeper philosophical questions without considering final and formal causes? Do the four causes help you see things from different perspectives and gain a better understanding of them?
Defend or criticize Plato’s Forms Theory. Some related thoughts: your textbook covers the third man criticism as well as other topics. The Forms would be the computer code if our world were a computer simulation. They are not physically present in this world, but they have complete control over it. Do people believe we’re living in a simulation? Yes, Bostrom’s Simulation Argument is available online.
Describe the central themes of Presocratic Philosophy. To illustrate, use at least three philosophers. Describe why they’re significant.
The Forms Theories of Plato and Aristotle are compared and contrasted.
What are the ramifications of moral relativism? Moral relativism?
Explain Plato’s Forms Theory. Could we be in a Matrix-style program or computer simulation?
For instance, here is one student’s thesis statement for a Stoicism paper (which we will be studying soon): Stoicism is a philosophically enriching philosophy for three reasons. To begin with, stoicism helps us better understand and internalize what is and is not under our control, which has tremendous power. Second, stoicism is a type of cognitive therapy that aids in the understanding and management of emotions. Third, stoicism allows us to concentrate on internal thoughts rather than external events, which is one of the keys to happiness.
Take note of how this student’s thesis statement is concise and effectively organizes/previews the essay. In the essay, the student went on to expand on each of these three points. For the first point, she gave examples of what we can control and what we can’t. She used Epictetus and Aurelius as examples. She gave examples of how to apply point one in the real world. In about a page and a half, she developed point one in three paragraphs. In a similar vein, she developed point two. Her paper came to a conclusion that was summative.
Grading of Papers
This week, watch the video for more tips on how to write a good philosophy essay. A model paper is also included in the back of your textbook.
75 percent of the content Did you correctly explain at least three philosophical themes? Did you provide unique insights, applications, or criticisms (good to superior) or did you simply retell what you learned about this philosophy (average)? Did you present sound arguments and avoid logical fallacies?
Readability and style are two of the most important factors to consider. 15% of the total Is your writing well-organized and clear? Is your essay clear when you read it out loud? Is it easy to read? Check for grammatical and spelling errors, as these will detract from the clarity of your writing.
Mechanics is the third subject. At least 3 full pages, 10% MLA, 12 point font, double spaced. You have up to four pages to write on.
