Instructions:
The first paragraph contains general information about your visit. The name of the museum you visited, its location, the date and time of your visit, and whether you traveled alone or with a group should all be included. Then, in a few sentences, describe the museum and your general assessment of its design/layout as well as its art collection. You might wish to think about things like: How was the museum laid out? What were the primary eras or styles that were represented? Was there a wide range of art or was there a focus on a certain style or artist?
The second paragraph is for your unique reaction. Consider asking yourself questions like: How was your overall experience? Was this your first time visiting this museum? Did you find it enjoyable? Why do you think that is? Was that exactly what you had hoped for? Why do you think that is? What did you enjoy the most about your visit? What could have been done better? How does experiencing art in person compare to seeing images in a textbook or on the internet?
Paragraph 3: A critical appraisal of a work of art with a link to the course topic. Choose a work of art from the museum and describe, discuss, evaluate, and compare it to other works of art in the course. It could be your favorite piece of art at the museum or simply something that drew your attention. The title, artist, date, period/style, and artistic media should all be included (painting, sculpture, etc). After that, give a brief description of the image. Most crucially, assess the work of art in light of the qualities of the movement or media in question. What aspects, for example, do you see in a Baroque picture that make it emblematic of the Baroque movement/style? What similarities does it have to another work of art from the same movement that was reviewed in class? For instance, if it’s a Hellenistic sculpture, what distinguishes it from other Hellenistic sculptures? You will invariably learn something about the work of art from the museum placard next to it, but your critical appraisal of the work should be based on what you have learnt in the course. If you utilize information from the placard or the museum’s website, make sure it is correctly attributed and recorded.
