My Life as a Benedictine Monk
Description
my life as a benedictine monk
Artists rendition of the Ideal Benedictine Abbey
Around 820, the Benedictine Abbot, Haito of Reichenau, devised an ideal “plan” of a monastery that he sent to the Abbot of St. Gall as possible design model. That plan which is still housed at St Gall in Switzerland served as a template for the ideal Benedictine Monastery.
For this assignment, I would like your research to involve the evaluation of The Plan of St. Gall. (Links to an external site.) Look carefully at the layout of the monastery and try to visualize what it was like to move through this space. How was it arranged and why?
Also, you are to analyze the rules of behavior of a Benedictine Monk as told to the monks in the Rules of St. Benedict (Links to an external site.), written as a manual by St Benedict himself. (This text is tough at first but the sections towards the end are easier to understand. I suggest you start there and then return to the beginning.)
Finally, please review the process of making an Illuminated Manuscript so you understand how it was done.
After you complete your research:
In 3-5 pages, I would like you to imagine that you are a scribe living at the ideal monastery as drawn out in the plan of St Gall in the 8th Century. Based on your research, and your knowledge of the plan of the Monastery and the life of a monk as dictated by the Rules of St Benedict, develop a scenario of your day there including the details of your life such as where you slept, what you wear, what you do, where you go in the monastery, and your job as a scribe.
This is meant to be a creative assignment that reflects your knowledge of the Plan of St Gall, and your understanding of the life of a Benedictine monk, and that of a scribe.
Watch grammar, spelling, word choice. Pease site the page number of the information taken from the Rules of St. Benedict after you refer to something from this text. For instance, “After working in the field, Brother Germinus and I gathered the tools, returned them to the Abbots office, then headed into the Mill.(Rules of St. Benedict, 17)
Here are some helpful resources to get your going:
Carolingian Culture at Reichenau and St Gall (Links to an external site.) website with lots of information about the Monastery and the plan as well as the manuscripts produced there and at the contemporary monastery of Reichenau.
The Daily Life of Medieval Monks by Ancient History (Links to an external site.) by Mark Cartwright for Ancient History Encyclopedia is a general overview of the life of a monk and is good start but does not offer the specifics of life at the ideal Benedictine Monastery.
The Making of a Medieval manuscript (Links to an external site.) video produced by the Getty Museum that you viewed earlier in the module.
