Topic:
In a concise and precise reflective paper, discuss the narrative structure of the film No Country for Old Men. In your response think about how this film falls or not into the classical paradigm. In your analysis take into account the cause and effect of the plot, the space and the time. Once you understand these elements, it’ll be easier for you to put your thoughts into perspective, and as a result you’ll write a well thought paper. If you have some troubles putting together your ideas, review the material on chapter 3 in the textbook. Also, read carefully the material about The Classical Paradigm described in the handout (pp. 337-342), posted on Ulearn.
In analyzing a film’s narrative structure, you should ask yourself some basic questions. Who’s telling the story? A voice-over narrator? Why him or her? Or does the story “tell it-self? Who is the implied narrator of such stories, the guiding hand in the arrangement of the narrative’s separate parts? How is the time presented: chronologically or subjectively rearranged through flashbacks and other narrative disjunctions? Is the narrative realistic or formalistic? What genre, if any? What does the movie say about the social context and period that it was made in? What do we as spectators supply to the story? What information do we provide to fill in the narrative’s gaps?
Remember, your paper should have an introduction—in which you state your reflexive paper’s thesis— as well as a solid conclusion.
Structure and Format of Essays
Introduction
An introductory paragraph should identify the topic and explain why it is historically significant. You should also present your thesis in this paragraph. Your thesis is a significant and original statement about the topic, based on critical interpretation of sources.
Body
In the body of your essay, you present the evidence to back your thesis. You present this evidence in a structured argument. For example, each paragraph could present a subtheme of the central argument, with topic sentences summarizing the evidence contained in each of those paragraphs. You must cite the sources of all information and ideas in your essay, and you should tell how the evidence backs your interpretation (or, if you are criticizing a source, explain why the evidence or interpretation it is faulty).
Conclusion
Here you state your thesis (in different words than in the introduction) and remind the reader of the evidence you have used to prove your argument.
