PERSUASIVE ESSAY ROUGH DRAFT OUTLINE CLASSICAL ARGUMENT
Audience: People who have opposing or neutral viewpoints to you.
The goal is to persuade and convince people through ethical and logical methods.
Subject: A problematic and debatable topic
What is the issue/problem in the first place? To grab the reader’s attention and create the context of persuasion, start with a quote, statistic, or noteworthy fact.
What is the significance of this? What is the significance of this position?
Why should the audience be interested in what you’re saying? What influence does this issue have on this audience?
What is the claim and what is the viewpoint on this issue? (Be careful to use the terms should or shouldn’t depending on which side of the debate you’re on.)
Name it (the topic you’re debating) + Verb it (should or shouldn’t be, depending on which side of the debate you’re on) + Finish it (why should the rest of the world be interested?) (briefly name the 3 arguments for this side of the issue).
Example: (claim statement) Medical marijuana (position) should be supported because of the numerous health, emotional, and financial advantages.
