Pointsec Mobile Technologies Case Study
Take a look at the Pointsec Mobile Technology case study below.
“Pointsec Mobile Technologies is a company that develops mobile applications.
When salespeople, construction supervisors, managers, and other personnel are away from the office, many of them use mobile devices such as laptop computers and PDAs, which often hold sensitive, personal information. Security systems are available from Pointsec (http://www.checkpoint.com/pointsec). Pointsec chose to disclose information regarding the amount of mobile devices left behind in cabs to bring home the vulnerability of such gadgets. 8 A poll of taxi drivers was conducted as part of the study. Major cab companies in nine cities in Australia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States were contacted by Pointsec’s public relations firm. These interviewers were placed in touch with around one hundred drivers by each of the participating companies. Over the previous six months, drivers were asked how many devices of each typecell phones, PDAs, PCs, and so onthey had left in their cab. They calculated the rate of objects left behind based on these figures. The researchers calculated city-by-city figures by multiplying the size of taxi fleets in each city: In Chicago, for example, 3.42 cell phones per cab resulted in 85,619 cell phones left behind. The study found that 63,135 cell phones were left in cabs in London, a staggering increase of 71% from four years ago.”
