Instructions:
Policy Brief Presentation: Power Point or Product You will upload your Policy Brief PowerPoint or Product into the Assignment tab in Blackboard (Bb). You will use the PowerPoint or Product when you present. Students will use Bb Collaborate to present their policy topic to other students near the end of the course (see dates in Policy Brief Sign-Up Sheets). Please complete this Sign-Up Sheet by the date listed in the Syllabus.
Identify a local, state or federal official, policy leader or consumer advocate to have a professional dialog with on the issue/legislation you have chosen. In the DB, you will give their name and position and why you chose them.
Your final assignment for the semester is a live 10-minute presentation that everyone does in small groups during Bb Collaborate Session (See Policy Brief Presentation Sign Up Sheets for available dates/ times). Between now and then you will need to:
· Identify several federal (or state) officials, policy leaders, professional organizations, or consumer advocacy groups to have a professional dialog with on the issue/legislation you have chosen.
· Begin to follow these stakeholders/ advocacy groups on Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook; and/or follow in mainstream media and online news throughout the semester. Keep screen shots of media/ social media coverage to include in your final presentation.
· Identifying more than one person/ organization will increase your chances of getting an interview, and you may want to prioritize who you would like to talk to; it may take longer to get in touch with some of those you identify.
· Your contact with the person can be by phone or in-person but not by email only. This interview/ encounter is a required aspect for the Policy Brief Presentation assignment. You may use/ share your Product, if one is created, during your interview/ encounter.
4. If you are unable to get a meeting with your chosen contact, choose another. You should be able to connect with a legislator, legislative staff or consumer advocate organization. You will report on your encounter when you present. For more detailed instructions and tips on how to do the encounter, see the assignment guidelines for the Policy Brief Presentation.
4. Alternate options for meeting the legislator contact will be posted in announcements this semester. These will be posted early in the semester.
1. In your presentation, you will give the name of the person you talked with, their job title, position on the legislation, and your rationale for selecting them. You will also need to describe the process of contacting them, and their responses so be sure to keep notes for yourself on your timeline of events for this assignment.
For tips on setting up a meeting and conducting the meeting read the Steps for Meeting with Members of Congress document . While this document focuses on meeting with a member of Congress, it can also inform meeting with local legislators or someone from a consumer advocate organization.
A. Policy Brief Presentation Guidelines: PPT
Components 1-7:
1. Describe the policy issue and legislation.
2. Include discussion on how you have tracked the legislation over the semester.
3. Describe the dialogue/interaction with the federal (or state) officials, policy leaders, professional organizations, or consumer advocacy groups about the issue/legislation you have chosen
4. Identify an advocacy strategy including which groups, agencies, you would want to be involved and what methodologies might be used.
5. Identify any press coverage or mentions in mainstream press or social media over the semester; and any posts by your policy leader or other advocacy groups on social media. Identify any hashtags/ handles on Twitter relevant to your policy topic.
6. The PPT should not be more than 10 slides as you will have 10 minutes to present followed by a 5-minute Q & A session with your attending colleagues.
7. APA format should apply for citations within the slide deck (in-text citations) and conclude a reference list at the end.
Note: Effective presentations limit the amount of information per slide and use bullet points. Make sure the slides are readable. There should be no spelling or grammar errors. Make sure your work is your own, do not paste and copy from websites or other PowerPoints.
B. Policy Brief Presentation Guidelines: Product
· * You may choose to create a product to meet Components 1-4 of PPT presentation above One-page infographic, 3-min (or less) video, 1-min audio public service announcement, Op-Ed, Blog post, Letter to the Editor, interactive historical timelines.
· * You will share this product with the class (and your congressional visit) for your Policy Brief Presentation.
· * Then share Components 5 and 7 in a one-page document or 2 power point slides to complete the assignment components.
· * This final presentation should present the product, components 5 and 7, within the time frame outlined in component 6 (10 minutes followed by a 5-minutes Q&A session).
Please note: The assignment is to (1) complete the submit the presentation materials by Due Date in Syllabus; (2) deliver the Presentation; AND (3) attend your colleague presentations for the date/ time you signed up for. Submitting a PowerPoint without a presentation does not fulfill the assignment, and points will be deducted if you are late for the presentations by your colleagues or leave the Bb Collaborate session early.
On the day of your presentation:
· * Please visit Blackboard Collaborate’s First Time User page at least 15-minutes in advance of the session to make sure your system is configured properly. You will also find links to learn more about Bb Collaborate on this page.
· * Please be sure to test your microphone. To access the test session, click the Bb Collaborate link at the bottom of the blackboard menu. Once you have accessed the session, select tools, Audio, Audio Set up Wizard. Please go through the wizard in advance of the session.
· * Before you join your session, you will need to have your PowerPoint pulled up and ready on your computer (or coordinate with Course Faculty as to who will get the PowerPoints ready for sharing during the Bb Collaborate session). When it comes time to present, you will need to share your screen. Your instructor will talk you through that.
· * On the day of the session, click the Bb Collaborate link at the bottom of the Blackboard menu to access the session. A link to the session will be available approximately 15-30 minutes prior to the scheduled start time.
