Population Size Of Sacramento Pikeminnow Discussion
Here are the requirements. The original journal will be provided when tutor is chosen.
Instruction for Journal 2: Refining my cause-effect question—
Journal 2 is a continuation from journal 1. Please revisit your journal 1 before writing
journal 2. On your last walk in your neighborhood. You may have asked descriptive type of
questions such as [How many fish are there in the American River?]. Or, you may have
asked cause-effect type of questions such as [What are the effects of human activities on
the fish in the American River?]. You MUST have a cause-effect type of question for this
assignment. If not, revisit & reflect on your first nature walk or take another walk, and ask a
cause-effect question. If you are not sure whether your question is a cause-effect type, then
try filling in these blanks: “I want to know the effect of ___(A) on ___(B)”? If you can, that
means you have a cause-effect question. (A) would be the cause.
You must use the following 5 headings for this particular journal.
I. [My cause-effect question] Be clear.
In this section, first state your cause-effect question clearly, then follow by stating: “I
want to know the effect of ___(A) on ___(B).”
II. [The scope of cause] Be in detail.
The scope of the cause(A) (e.g., human activities) is likely too broad in your
question. You may want to narrow it down (say, engine-boating). The more specific the
better! In this section, tell me what the [cause] you want to focus on is. Then, clearly
describe your thinking process of determining the scope of the cause. (Why is that [cause]
important?)
III. [The scope of effect] Be in detail.
Many aspects (i.e., effects) of the subject (B, say the fish) might change if the cause
(A, say, engine-boating) is present/increased. Think of 3 aspects (for example, species
diversity, or population size of certain species) of the subject that interest you. Among the 3
aspects, you must narrow it down to 1. For example, you are interested in the effects on the
population size of Sacramento pikeminnow. See, it’s the population size of Sacramento
pikeminnow, not whatever of everything. In this section, first list the 3 aspects, then tell me
what the aspect you want to focus on is. Finally, clearly describe your thinking process of
determining the scope of the effect. (Why is it important to investigate that effect?)
IV. [Refined question & Hypothesis]
Now you have refined & specified the cause & effect. In this section, first restate your
refined research question. Then, propose a hypothesis for that question. Make sure you
include a rationale for your hypothesis.
V. [Background]
Go online to look up background knowledge related to the research question and
hypothesis that you have on the last section. Read as much as you can. In this section, give
a synopsis of what you have read, particularly the background knowledge that supports
your rationale.
[Word count]
Give your word count. Write at least 300 words in total for this journal.
