Presentation on health information technology
Instructions
You will assess the workflow and human-technology interface of a health information technology used in nursing practice for this project, and make recommendations for improvements as needed. Your findings and ideas will be summarized in a narrated presentation.
The following should be included in your presentation:
1) Overview of Technology (30 points).
Choose a piece of healthcare technology that helps a nurse execute a task or function. This could be a stand-alone device like a vital signs monitor, a nursing task or function conducted within the EHR, or any other software or technology tool utilized in nursing. Choose a technology that can be assessed using the 10 Usability Heuristics for Interface Design when a nurse interacts with it (see Step 4).
Describe the technology, including its origins, evolution, and application in nursing care.
Describe how the technology boosted or improved patient care, safety, or outcomes.
2) Examine the Workflow (30 points). Examine the clinical workflow associated with the technology’s utilization.
Using technology, create a current state process map that depicts each phase of a nurse’s workflow. Describe how things are going right now.
Describe how the technology helps or hurts the healthcare workflow. What changes could be made to the technology or workflow to improve efficiency or better support patient care? You may make a future state process map to show the enhanced processes if it’s appropriate.
3) Human-Computer Interaction (30 points). Examine the human-machine interface.
Find or photograph the technology, including all screens or pieces that a nurse interacts with. (Note: If you can’t find or take a screen capture from the EHR, you can use Word or PowerPoint drawing capabilities to mock up the screen(s).)
Describe, step by step, how the nurse interacts with the technology or computer screen(s).
Using the 10 Usability Heuristics for Interface Design, assess the human-technology interface. What could be made better? Why? Make certain that each factor is addressed.
4) Conclusion (10 points).
Make a summary of your findings.
As needed, present suggested adjustments to the technology and/or workflow.

Presentation Suggestions
Your presentation should be roughly 5-10 minutes long and include 2-3 slides for each of the aforementioned components. This is an estimate; you will not be penalized if your presentation is less or longer than this as long as you address each of the items listed above.
Keep in mind that your story and graphics should work in tandem. Include essential points in the slide’s text, diagrams, or other graphics, and expand on them in your narration.
