A definition of the “one drop rule”
A discussion of how this was unique to the USA and is not found in other countries
A discussion of why founders such as Thomas Jefferson believed in the “one drop rule”
A description of how race is socially constructed
How you think most Americans see the “one drop rule” today. Does it still apply?
Respond to my classmates post on the discussion above in 50 words
The One Drop Rule is a social and legal principle of racial classification that was well known in the 20th century of the United States. It meant that anyone with even one ancestor of African American descent was classified as black. Now, this
law was only in the U.S.A because by 1776, twelve of the thirteen colonies that declared independence forbade intermarriage. Thomas Jefferson once wrote “all men are created equal” but he enslaved over six hundred people… I could not find out exactly why Jefferson believed in the one-drop rule but it seemed as if he was secretly wanting slavery. Many say it to be a human-invented classification system that defines physical differences between people. Unfortunately has often
been used for abuse and violence. I am on the fence about how Americans see the one rule drop today because there is nothing wrong with having a black ancestor, many use apps to find out their history. I think back in the day one rule drop was racist, it should not matter your bloodline we should all be seen as equals. Human beings.
