In this chapter Dahl discusses how democracy has evolved from the Greeks to today. While the Greeks had a broader less inclusive democracy, we now have a representative democratic system. The Greeks interpretation of democracy might have worked for them in that time, but with how big the United States has gotten, that system wouldn’t work. Dahl used a great analogy he says “to deny that Athens was a democracy would be rather like saying that what the Wright brothers invented was not an airplane because their early machine so little resembled ours today (pg 102).”
Although democracy can mean different things at different times, it doesn’t mean it stops being democracy. According to Dahl, “in a small political unit, such as a town, assembly democracy allows citizens desirable opportunities for engaging in the process of governing themselves that a representative government in a large unit simply cannot provide (pg 103).” I don’t think there is a right or wrong way to have a democracy, as long as it takes it’s citizens into consideration. The US had it’s own take on democracy and our system seems to be working. It has changed into a two party democracy over the course of the years, because that is how the citizens are represented.
