Today more than ever this topic is of immense importance. The last few years thanks to cell phones and widespread access to the internet and social media a spotlight has been placed upon the disparity between Caucasians and people of color in this country.
National statistics for incarceration, education, and health care have shown this disparity for years. For a decade I have taught human variation and the fact that biologically speaking, there is no such thing as race. That is a fact based on biology not culture.
We do not live in a color blind society. Race is very much a real tangible thing that affects many people every day in the form of racism, discrimination, bigotry, and hate. It is also a powerful affirming cultural identity that brings people together based on a shared history, experience, and other cultural characteristics. Please be thoughtful, considerate, and respectful with your responses to the questions below. Consider that other students will have had vastly different experiences from your own.
