Honoring Denise Loray Valentine
The Council of the City of Philadelphia is pleased and proud to recognize and honor Denise Loray Valentine for her cultural and social contributions to the city of Philadelphia.
Whereas, Denise Loray Valentine was an accomplished master Griot/storyteller, activist, historian, historical performer, educator, and mother of three who was dedicated to uncovering, preserving, and sharing the history and stories of the African diaspora. She was born on September 4th, 1959 and transitioned on March 22nd, 2020; and
Whereas, Denise Valentine was the founder of the Philadelphia Middle Passage Ceremony and Port Marker Project and was instrumental in the placement of the Pennsylvania Slave Trade historical marker at Penn’s Landing. She also served as the Project Coordinator of the annual Ancestral Remembrance Day, honoring the memory and sacrifices of enslaved Africans and encouraging discussion, reflection, and community initiatives toward reparation and reconciliation. Her work helped Philadelphia earn the prestigious designation as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) “Site of Memory;” and
Whereas, Denise was a respected member of Philadelphia’s own Keepers of the Culture, where she earned the name “Story Mama,” as well as the National Association of Black Storytellers, the PA Humanities Council Speakers Bureau, and a member of the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts. Denise also served as Project Editor for the Philadelphia Assembled Project through the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Working alongside Reconstruction Inc., she led formerly incarcerated men in building storytelling skills grounded in African and African-American traditions to help them tell their own stories; and
Whereas, Denise dedicated her life to human rights and social justice and was an active part of the Free Mumia Movement, the Anti-Apartheid movement, and several others. She has performed in several countries including Jamaica, the West Indies, South Africa, and, most recently, the Netherlands. Her motto, “Stories are like roots to the past and wings to the future,” conveyed her understanding of the importance of stories to our collective humanity and their ability to ground us in our history while giving us courage and vision to dream of a better future.
Therefore, by virtue of this Citation, the Council of the City of Philadelphia does hereby recognize and honor Denise Loray Valentine for her cultural and social contributions to the city of Philadelphia.
