Response to John Locke’s Philosophy of Object Property Discussion
Write a minimum of 100 words in response to these responses:
Good day, everyone!
This week, I decided to explain what John Locke meant when he said “property of objects.” He proposed the idea that people have the right to life, liberty, and property. When a person starts working, they gain ownership of the land around
them. He believed that land was placed there for man’s enjoyment. The only exception to his theory was that just because you claimed it didn’t mean you could stop others from doing so. It was natural land, and he couldn’t understand why
humans could prevent others from claiming it and then imposing a slew of restrictions on it. That is why, when someone works and owns a piece of land, it becomes one through the man and the land, and through God, they are able to naturally
share that land with everyone else. He believed that societies built themselves in this way. It was through people owning the land and allowing others to grow and build on it, and through a natural bond, they built together. ……………………… John
Locke defined empiricism as the belief that our knowledge and ideas are based on our experiences. In this context, experience refers to sensations gleaned from our surroundings. When we walk into a room, we use our sense organs: our eyes,
nose, mouth, hands/feet, and ears to experience it. These sensory organs collect information about the environment in which we find ourselves. This information gathering process produces simple sensations at first. A simple sensation might
be seeing a red-painted wall or smelling a flower that has a pleasant scent. These simple sensations then combine to create much more complex things. Complex sensations can give our brain more information about the environment we’re in. We can see the overall shape of the room, we can see the colors, we can smell the room, and we can touch the walls and floor and know that it is firm and has texture. The ideas we form about our environment are built on the foundation of
these complex sensations. These concepts are the foundation of our understanding of the environment we are in. It is our ideas that are linked to our knowledge, and our ideas are based on our sensory experiences. We can conclude
categorically that without experience, there is no knowledge. (Locke)
As a result, Empiricism is the process by which we experience our surroundings through sensations in order to provide the basis for knowledge.
