Social Justice Development Application Paper
Application Paper
GENERAL DIRECTIONS
This written paper has THREE main sections, each listed below; each are required for the final paper. You will also include a reference page that will be submitted as part of the paper. The total length of the paper will be 5 pages, double spaced.
APA-style citations are required both in-text and in your reference page. If you provide information from the textbook, organization websites, etc., without proper citation, you will receive a 0 on your paper and be reported for plagiarism. The reference page is mandatory.
The paper should be written in a narrative format, but you are encouraged to label each section clearly for your instructor for ease of grading. Do not cut/paste the questions into your document.
You are required to use APA Style Citation Format for your external (agency) citations as well as the textbook citation, both in-text and in the reference page. APA style refers to the citations only; you are not required to use an APA format for the paper itself, since it is not a research paper and does not require an abstract, methods, etc.
Not familiar with APA style? Check out the Purdue Owl website — it will even generate your reference page citations for you!
OUTLINE DRAFT:
This is just an outline where you start to fill in information about your non-profit site, concepts from the book and how you will be applying the information across Bronfenbrenner’s model. Be sure you list which sources you’re going to use, but the formatting doesn’t need to be exact in this draft.
ROUGH DRAFT:
For your rough draft, you will turn in a narrative draft of your paper that is more fully fleshed out. Each section should be clearly labeled. This draft will include your citations/sources, including your Reference page. The goal of this draft is to provide as much information in draft form so that I can provide you with feedback.
FINAL APPLICATION PAPER:
This is the final, professional and polished version of your paper. It should be proof-read, and submitted as a formal final version.
APPLICATION PAPER REQUIRED SECTIONS — all sections should be written in narrative form.
Section 1: Overview of Non-Profit Site
Using one non-profit site that you have chosen in your discussion board, you will discuss the site in Section One. First, give the name of agency, address, and website for the site.
Then, describe the agency and the programs that it offers. This should be a general description of the focus of the agency. Do not just cut/paste large chunks of information from the agency website; paraphrase and provide citations. Because you will be using information from a website or brochure, be sure to provide a citation. You should answer the following:
· What is the mission of the agency? (with citation, use quotation marks if you use direct quotes)
· What is the specific population that they serve (e.g., “consumers”) and the social issue that they address? How do they address the social issue?
· How do they get their funding and resources?
· How does this agency’s work impact the community? What would happen if this agency disappeared from the community?
Section 2: COVID-19 Pandemic Impact on Community Site Consumers
In this section, you will discuss specific concepts (highlighted in your paper in bold) that relate to all three areas of physical, cognitive and socioemotional development in this analysis. The goal of this section is to address how the COVID-19 pandemic is specifically impacting the consumers that typically receive services at this non-profit site across the physical, cognitive and socioemotional domains.
You are required to use at least 2 course concepts per domain (6-9 concepts maximum) in this section and provide the textbook citation for each. You are also required to use at least 2 reputable external websites (e.g., CDC, WHO) as references for the pandemic impact. You are allowed to use additional external resources to support your discussion.
· Do not use generic/global terms: Terms such as “physical development,” “cognitive development,” “socioemotional development,” adulthood and aging,” etc., are so vague as to not provide specific descriptions and detract from the analysis. It must be a specific concept or theory from the text
· Type your specific terms/concepts in bold print and provide the citation in APA style, with Page # added so that I can look up your course concept or the section you are referring to if I want clarification.
· Course concepts refer to any key term, theory component, or specific research that the textbook refers to. So, for example, if you are discussing food insecurity as your social justice issue, then “malnutrition” is a course concept you may want to discuss.
Section 3: Bronfenbrenner Model Integration
In this section, use each layer of Bronfenbrenners model to discuss the short-term and long-term impact of COVID-19 on this specific site. You should create a generic consumer as an example (e.g., create a false consumer to walk through the model with) or you can speak in generalities. However, you must specifically address each of the levels of Bronfenbrenners model (microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem). You do not need to discuss chronosystem.
End your paper with a full paragraph answering this question: What could you personally do at this moment to meaningfully address the social justice issue related to the site and positively impact the site and the consumers they serve, without directly serving them? You can address it at any of the following levels: Individuals, communities, education or government/policy. Provide at least one concrete solution that is realistic given the current social distancing guidelines, and how you would complete this action.
· Do not use vague or generic solutions such as “raise money” or “get more volunteers.” This doesn’t solve the social justice issue in a meaningful way.
· Go beyond “advertise on social media.” This only impacts your social circle.
Reference Page
The reference page will be the last page of your application paper. At a minimum, the reference page will include the informational source for the service site (website, brochure, personal communication) and the textbook, as well as the two required external references. Include any additional references that you used to write the paper. This should be written in APA style.

Application Paper Tips
This paper is the final, integrated application of the course material that you are learning to the social justice issue you are passionate about and have selected a non-profit service site to discuss. Think about the paper this way:
Each person is a unique individual made up of their identity factors (e.g., race, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious identity, ability status, age, and socioeconomic status) as well as their life experiences (e.g., access to equal education, healthcare, exposure to environmental toxins, relationships with peers, mass media, etc.). Each person is the intersection of their unique identity statuses.
In Bronfenbrenner’s model, this is the individual in the center. This is the person/consumer you will be talking about in Section 2 of the paper, who is being impacted by COVID, both in their personal lives but in their ability to access resources. You will want to think about the “typical consumer” who is potentially using the non-profit site and how specific developmental concepts are being impacted by the current pandemic in their physical, cognitive and socioemotional domains.
People do not live in a vacuum! Therefore, we also know that COVID has impacted neighborhoods, communities, and access to resources. The non-profit site you’ve selected (Discussed in Section 1) exists in the person’s microsystem and may interact with their other neighbors/community resources in the mesosystem. The exosystem will consist of governmental policies (local, state and federal), employment, educational, and healthcare system policies that trickle down and impact the person’s direct one-on-one environment. The impact can be positive (e.g., increased funding so that a person can continue to live in their home if they’ve been laid off from COVID) or negative (e.g., shutting down surgeries that require overnight stays and delaying potentially urgent healthcare).
The macrosystem is the cultural system that the person lives in. This may or may not be consistent with their personally-held cultural values. In the United States, the cultural value of Individualism, for example, means that the person comes first before others. But other cultures hold collectivism as their value, meaning the well-being of the group comes before the individual (all discussed in Section 3).
