Description
ONLY Resources on the assignment sheet and that I have provided can be used. The assignment asks to watch a few videos on the Dakota Access Pipeline Protest. All details are explicitly included below. Please be diligent in following directions down to the letter. 2 sources have been attached. One is slides and other is a link to reading.
You are asked to reflect on the issues of social movements by connecting course materials (lectures, readings), videos we saw during lecture (one on youth participation and another one on the role of social media), and 4 videos on the Dakota Access Pipeline Protest (DAPL). Specifically, you are asked to review what happened in the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) protest, consider why this movement was not really successful, and what we can learn from the DAPL protest to make social movements (of your interest) successful. Your response paper should be about 1-1.5 page. Your paper is graded on the definition of letter (see Definitions of Grades – Assignment Letter Grade).
Make sure to write in a way that would satisfy experts but would still be accessible by the general public audience. Accordingly, use and incorporate technical terms/concepts/theories, but elaborate these using lay-people language. For example, when you use terms, provide a brief description of what they are before talking about them more in-depth in relation to the film clip so that people who have never taken sociology classes or who have never heard of specific terms can still understand your paper.
Formatting of the Paper:
Font: Arial, size 11.5 pt
Spacing: Single-space
Length: About 1-1.5 pages
Margins: 1 inches all around
Citations: Both in-text and reference page citations in ASA format (note that
your reference page should be on a separate page, so use insert page
breakand start a new page/section for a reference)
Writing style: Think about the audience of this paper as a mix of experts (like
me) and lay readers
What You Need to Include in the Paper:
1. After reviewing course materials (readings and lecture materials), watch the following 4 YouTube videos on the Dakota Access Pipeline Protest (DAPL):
Overview of DAPL protest: https://youtu.be/P-nnzizoGQ4
Music campaign to support DAPL protest 1: https://youtu.be/Onyk7guvHK8
1
Music campaign to support DAPL protest 2: https://youtu.be/E-QGkYNc0Ls
Documentary of the “inside look” of the DAPL protest:
2. Write a paper on what you can learn from the DAPL protest regarding the
success of social movement/protest by incorporating course materials (readings and lecture materials) and the videos on DAPL protest case. Make sure to address the following:
Introduction: Short introduction to the issues of social movement. A note that you are using DAPL protest as a case to look at success of social movement.
Body:
Introduce the DAPL protest case. As you refer to the 5 components of
social movements, summarize what happened in the DAPL protest case (you may need to look at news articles and other resources as supplements).
Elaborate on the issues of how the DAPL protest mobilized people by discussing resources, networks, strategies, and tactics used. Ultimately, answer the question of why people joined the protest and what the protest as an organization did to encourage more participation.
Referring to Meyer reading (2003) and other materials, discuss the gap between what the activists wanted and policy implementations in the Dakota Access Pipeline Protest case. Moreover, make sure to discuss why you think that the DAPL protest movement was not successful by referring to course materials. Finally, thinking about Winona LaDuke’s quote, do you think that this protest had a lasting effect on other/future social movements? Why so or not so?
Conclusion:
Thinking about any social cause that you are interested in, briefly
introduce what they are and discuss how you might try to make the social movement regarding your interest successful based on the discussions above. In other words, what could you learn from the failures of the Dakota Access Pipeline Protest to make a social movement (related to your interest) successful?
Make sure to incorporate multiple course materials throughout the paper. You are required to provide in-text citations and a reference page. Your in-text citations and reference page citations must utilize the ASA style. You are NOT allowed to refer to
2
or cite some random, non-legitimate websites or data (only refer to and cite sources that are legitimate and verifiable).
