Social Use of Technology
In the article Facebook as Communication Support for persons with Potential Mild Acquired Cognitive Impairment (MACI), Eghdam Aboozar gives reasons why the use of
social media and technology could be a method for communication rehabilitation for people with serious brain injuries that causes memory impairment, headaches, and
fatigue like Alzheimer’s or MACI. Aboozar discloses that “Sweden has over 70,000 people suffering from brain injuries every year and the most common causes are strokes
and head injuries, and about 80 percent of them suffer from mild impairment s.” Optimistic over the intent of this study, Aboozar wanted to make a connection on the content
of communication, how often communication occurred, and the types of interactions that where being made by using Facebook technology by people with perceived brain
injuries. Although, people with brain injuries should undergo “brain training” to help improve brain and communication skills whether it is doing puzzles or interacting with
someone.
Agreed, communication is one of the most important aspects of everyday life that we all should make time for in any way that we can. Communication is a complex process
that involves many aspects of thinking and social skills. If your brain injury impairs any of these skills then it can affect the ability to communicate successfully. Facebook, is
used on an everyday bases to communicate to friends, relatives, and other people who share similar interest. What better platform to use that could help with brain injuries
that are expected to reach a stable cognitive level over time? Even though Aboozar article offers honest advice on the effects of individuals with chronic medical conditions
such as MACI, studies are taking more of a pensive approach of the realities of the social use of technology and social media, the article states that everything from now a
person with potential MACI or brain fatigue after injury communicates through Facebook, and also shows how people used social media technology and Facebook as a means
for communication and support for their condition.
In the process, Aboozar’s group members shows that most people only communicated with less people and had little direct communications with other members. The most
communication was the use of the “like” button which displayed a “thumbs up” only when something was appealing to them. It was concluded that people with MACI has
similar communication behavior as a healthy person without any cognitive impairment.
