21 replies. Please write a post on what some scholars have called the two endings of the play: the first before the entrance of Herakles as the deus ex machina, when Philoctetes’ suffering appears to convince Neoptolemus to accompany him (Philoctetes) home, and the second, when Herakles somewhat miraculously appears and convinces Philoctetes and Neoptolemos to go to Troy to defeat the Trojans.
What works to bring about a resolution in the play? Is it suffering (and thus human compassion; Neoptolemus feels sorry for Philoctetes) or amnesia (Philoctetes has to forget how much he resents the Greeks) or simply the unexpected miracle of a god who can order the humans around (only a miracle can work…)? You must use at least 2 quotes from the play in your post!
Maximum of 150 words.
Second,
In 150 words, relate one or two of the arguments discussed by Professor Newman in the video lectures for weeks 5 and/or 6 to a contemporary cultural, political or scientific event of your choice. Please explain: 1. what was said in the lecture regarding the texts and contexts of the authors examined and, 2. how it may help us read or analyze this event in a fruitful way. Be specific! You can write about an event in the U.S. or elsewhere in the world; be sure to describe exactly what you are writing about and include a link of information about the event (these are some of the sources where you can look for info and share the links: The LA Times, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Nation, Vox, ProPublica, The Jacobin, Vice News, etc). Your comparison point can be any important bit from any of the lectures for weeks 5 or 6.
Remember watch the lecture video before you start writing:
