Research Paper Grading Requirements Checklist
1. The paper has five sections an introduction which introduces the topic in general and then defines the characteristics of SGL, a section relating those characteristics to A Good Man Is Hard to Find, a section relating those characteristics to Good Country People, a section relating those characteristics to A Rose for Emily, and a conclusion which wraps it all up.
2. The paper must be a well-organized formal essay with a clear thesis and well-developed paragraphs with topic sentences which are related to the thesis.
3. The paper must not have a similarity match in turnitin.com of more than 30% or less than 10%.
4. The paper must not be plagiarized. Plagiarized papers will receive a grade of 0. (See syllabus for detailed explanation of plagiarism.)
5. The paper is 1500-1800 words. A percentage will be deducted from the grade for missing content.
6. The paper must be written in MLA format with double spacing and a correctly formatted works cited page. The formatting must be MLA style. The sources listed on your assignment sheet are NOT in the correct format, so make sure you look up the correct way to format these sources.
7. There must be 3 primary sources (the stories themselves), 1 required reference source to define the characteristics of Southern Gothic literature (link on assignment sheet), and 4 secondary sources in the form of scholarly journal articles from the assignment sheet. These sources must be listed correctly in MLA 8th edition format on the works cited page and quoted from in the paper itself. Each missing or unauthorized source will result in a -10 deduction. Students may not use sources other than those listed on the assignment sheet. Sources such as study.com, Shmoop, Sparknotes, or enotes are completely unacceptable and will not count as a source. Students may not use biographical material in place of the 4 required scholarly journal articles. However, students may use biographical sources on the authors IN ADDITION TO the other required sources. Essays submitted without the required documented research will receive a grade of 0.
8. All of the sources on the works cited page are cited within the paper. Demonstrating competent research skills is not only a requirement of this course, it is a state standard for English 1102. Students must exhibit the ability to quote and paraphrase from three approved primary and five secondary sources in order to receive a passing grade on this research paper.
9. The paper must have correct MLA 8th edition parenthetical citations with page numbers. Ex. (Askin 34) The approved GALILEO articles listed on the research paper assignment sheet all have page numbers. Accurate page numbers must be cited within the paper and match the page numbers listed on the works cited page. Failure to provide this information is often a sign of plagiarism or poor research skills and will severely impact the grade.
10. The paper must be written in 12 pt. Times New Roman font.
11. Literature must be written about in the present tense, not the past tense. Example: In A Streetcar Named Desire, Blanche fears the loss of her youth.
12. The paper must not be written in the second person. In other words, the word you should not be found in the paper.
13. The paper must be written in an appropriate collegiate tone. There should be no slang or use of informal language.
14. The paper must show skillful use of the English language. This course is ultimately an English language course. Edit carefully for grammatical and mechanical errors such as fragments, comma splices, tangled sentence structure, pronoun agreement errors such as A student should do their homework, subject verb agreement errors, misspellings and misused words, missing commas and apostrophes, etc. A preponderance of unedited errors can cause a failing grade.Southern gothic research term paper
