Thesis statement (2 tier) *refer to my professors sampleSummary and analysis of first article: Free Expression in Peril
Summary and analysis of second article: Warning: The Literary Canon Could Make Students Squirm
***for the analysis include how the author establishes ethos, pathos and logos. Look at what the author said, how they said it, and what kind of questions it prompts. Look at how they constructed the article

Synthesis of new idea (about a page). May include questions that lead to that idea.
Concluding paragraph that emphasizes merit of reflecting on the more idea
3. *Remember* 7 pages total. Include about 4 pages of analysis and 1 page of the synthesis. The synthesis section requires development of a new idea and perhaps supportive research.(3rd source)
4. Be sure to include numerous quotes and in text citations from each article
*note of how the authors establish ethos (credibility), pathos (emotional appeal), and logos (logical appeal) –This is the (rhetorical) ANALYSIS part of the paper
*feel free to include some of my ideas:
-The two articles address the topics of academic freedom and trigger warnings.
-Geoffrey Stone captures the complexity of the topic and how there is no easy fix. He appeals to logic (logos) by showing how academic freedom has evolved from the past situation. His use of hypothetical and real examples that may be familiar to the audience establishes ethos. He also establishes credibility by defining the terms that the audience might not know. The use of examples make the reader feel discomfort because it shows how complex the issue is.
– Stone takes a critical view of today’s generation of students. They are weak, fragile, and emotionally unstable?! (pathos)
-Geoffrey Stone doesn’t solve the issue–he gives the readers something to think aboutSynthesis (new idea)
-in the fight to maintain freedom of expression perhaps the problem is the way we express ourselves?Synthesis Analysis Essay of 2 Articles
