The Two-Part Karajan Conductors and Reflections
Tell me about the two-part Karajan assignments. Performance vs. Rehearsal. In the past, the Rehearsal assignment came first. This time, the Performance came first. When comparing the quality of your responses with past sections, there was, without a doubt, much more deeply felt responses from this current section. There was a big difference in tone, mainly in the shock of what a rehearsal was, after seeing the performance. Even the three excepts from the rehearsals were more thoughtful. Consider this article from The Economist (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. as well.

Overwhelmingly, you guys have written that this piece is uncomfortable to listen to, but that it has also changed your idea of what classical music can be. Some of you have also claimed that you weren’t able to sit through the entire piece, simply because of how horrifying it is to listen to.
I want you to reflect on the positive side of discomfort, to research (internet, book, etc.) the concept of discomfort, and to write about how you can use discomfort as a way to grow yourself.
See file below.
Listening Exercise
Listen to “Gretchen am Spinnrade” several times before beginning this exercise (make sure you look at the text and translation). Then prepare answers for the questions.
