Treatment for Major Depressive Disorder Patients
Mood disorders can affect every aspect of a person’s life, making even the most basic tasks difficult for patients and their families to complete. This was the case for Jeanette, a 13-year-old who was having difficulties at home and at school. Jeanette had temper outbursts, impulsiveness, inappropriate conduct, trouble with judgment, and sleep problems for more than 8 years.
You must be able to determine whether these symptoms are caused by psychological, social, or underlying growth and development issues as a PNP working with pediatric patients. You must then be able to make appropriate therapy recommendations.
This week, while you study antidepressant therapy, you’ll look at how to assess and treat three different populations: children, adults, and the elderly. Your decision tree, which will serve as your assessment tool, will focus on one of the most vulnerable populations: children. Remember to think about the ethical and legal consequences of these therapies as well. You’ll also have to take a quiz on the ideas covered in this section.
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to:
Assess patient variables and history to produce tailored antidepressant treatment programs for people of all ages.
Analyze factors that influence antidepressant pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes in juvenile, adult, and elderly patients.
Organize your knowledge about how to care for pediatric, adult, and elderly patients who are seeking antidepressant treatment.
Examine the ethical and legal ramifications of prescribing antidepressant therapy to patients of all ages.
Assessing and Treating Mood Disorders in Children and Adolescents
The process of examining, diagnosing, and treating pediatric patients with mood disorders can be fairly difficult. Children not only have different indications and symptoms than adults with the same diseases, but they also metabolize drugs differently. However, in both pediatric and adult cases of major depressive disorders, the same psychopharmacologic therapy may be used. As a result, while prescribing psychotropic drugs to these patients, psychiatric nurse practitioners must be cautious. Consider how you may assess and treat pediatric patients who present with mood disorders as you look over the patient case study in this week’s Learning Resources for this Assignment.
To get ready for this assignment, do the following:
Review the Learning Resources for this week, including the Medication Resources for this week.
Consider the psychopharmacologic treatments you might suggest for the evaluation and management of pediatric patients who need antidepressant medication.
The Project: 5 pages
Examine the case of an African American child who is depressed. You’ll have to make three selections about the medication you should give this patient. Take into account any potential influences on the patient’s pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes.
At each decision point, you should weigh all of your possibilities before making your choice and continuing with the exercise. Make sure you’ve done your homework on each choice and that you’ve considered all of your options before making a selection. Make careful to conduct primary research on each option.
The case’s introduction (1 page)
Explain and summarize the case for this assignment in a few sentences. When prescribing medication for this patient, be sure to consider the specific patient factors that may influence your decision.
1st decision (1 page)
Which option did you choose?
Why did you come to this conclusion? Make your response particular, and back it up with therapeutically relevant and patient-specific resources, such as primary literature.
Why did you not select the other two options presented in the exercise? Make your response particular, and back it up with therapeutically relevant and patient-specific resources, such as primary literature.
What were your intentions when you made this decision? Evidence and references to the Learning Resources should be used to back up your response (including the primary literature).
Describe how ethical issues may affect your treatment approach and patient communication. Give instances and be specific.
Second choice (1 page)
Why did you come to this conclusion? Make your response particular, and back it up with therapeutically relevant and patient-specific resources, such as primary literature.
Why didn’t you choose one of the other two possibilities in the exercise? Make your response particular, and back it up with therapeutically relevant and patient-specific resources, such as primary literature.
What were your intentions when you made this decision? Evidence and references to the Learning Resources should be used to back up your response (including the primary literature).
Describe how ethical issues may affect your treatment approach and patient communication. Give instances and be specific.
3rd Choice (1 page)
Why did you come to this conclusion? Make your response particular, and back it up with therapeutically relevant and patient-specific resources, such as primary literature.
Why didn’t you choose one of the other two possibilities in the exercise? Make your response particular, and back it up with therapeutically relevant and patient-specific resources, such as primary literature.

final thoughts (1 page)
Write a summary of your recommendations for the patient’s therapy options. Make careful you defend your suggestions and back them up with clinically relevant and patient-specific materials, such as primary research.
Note: Include at least five academic resources to back up your argument. The course text may be used to support your reasoning, but it does not count toward the resource requirement. You should make use of both primary and secondary sources.
Reminder: All papers submitted to the College of Nursing must have a title page, introduction, summary, and references. The Walden Writing Center’s Sample Paper (https://academicguides.waldenu.edu/writingcenter/templates/general#s-lg-box-20293632) contains an example of those needed parts. This formatting must be used in all articles submitted.
By the seventh day,
