Understanding Adaptation and Endemism Change
Discussion Question:
What do YOU think about the boojum now that you know more about the Sonoran Desert an its unique species? Does understanding adaptation and endemism change how you see certain plants?
Please reply to this classmate:
I did not know that the boojum existed before the visual presentation actually, but I was impressed by the fact that it would take five decades for boojums to grow up to a considerable size. This was kinda sad as well because it would mean that this extremely specialized species need much more time to grow in this changing climate. From my general impression so far, it seemed that the Sonoran desert species were much more suspectible to these kind of changes because they are highly adapted to a specific environment, meaning little changes could negatively affect many life-forms in this area.
However, it is because of this endemism that we must protect these plants and animals even though it could be harder to protect these specialized species than more common species. Unique adaptations like drought-deciduous and photosynthesis without leaves could be useful to survive in the changing climate. Plants like the boojum that we thought are strange could give us valuable information that others don’t.
