Unethical Organizational Climate and Culture Discussion
Post an analysis of possible causes of the culture of corruption and corresponding unethical behavior in the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet. Refer to theories and practices of organizational ethics from Week 4 of our course, in addition to other sources you may find on the web (make sure to include a link to the source in your post), and to theories and practices of employee motivation and organizational culture from Week 5.
Read the investigative article, “The Man Who Seduced the 7th Fleet” (available via the UM Richter Library search feature) to understand the details of the corruption that produced a dysfunctional culture and an uninterrupted series of unethical acts for a decade or more. You can find more information about the case by doing a web search. In addition, search the web for information about the U.S. Navy’s formal organizational values and Ethics Codes. Knowing what you now know about why people who consider themselves to be “ethical” sometimes act unethically, assess the causes of the dysfunctional culture and the unethical behavior in the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet by referencing the theories, strategies, and practices you have learned about in our Week 4 and Week 5 course materials and any new information you find by doing a web search. Once you have identified causes, suggest possible strategies to promote ethical behavior and change the organizational culture in the U.S. Navy’s 7th Fleet.
Be sure to specify the criteria you use to make your arguments. Include references to the readings and your own research where appropriate. Link any relevant web sources that you use to support your arguments.
