Week 5 Role in the Lives of African Americans
For the initial post, pick two (2) of the following categories representing minority groups during 1880-1914:
Women’s rights activists
African Americans
Immigrants from southern and eastern Europe
Child workers
Great Plain Indians
Then, address the following for your selections:
Explain the socio-economic status and challenges of your minority groups at the turn of the century.
How did the Industrial Revolution affect your chosen minority groups?
Analyze how the Progressives brought reform to your selected minority groups. Do you find that the Progressives were successful in making government responsive and improve the conditions of your chosen minority group?
Follow-Up Posts
Compare your selections and analysis of selections with those of your peers. If they chose different groups, examine how yours are similar and/or different. If they chose the same groups, build on their posts by providing additional information about the groups that you have not already noted in your own post.
Professor and Class,
During this time, the African Americans were in a time of growth and movement, called the “Great Migration”. This was the end of the Civil War but the beginning of the Great Depression where millions of African Americans fled from the South to seek a new life. According to Corbett et al. (2014), they were headed to the cities of New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Detroit, Pittsburg, Cleveland and Indianapolis. Although there was an ending to slavery there was still extensive racial hate and segregation, which proved unwell for the African Americans.
At this time there was a rise of the KKK which intensified the racial hate within the country, especially the South. Many African Americans could not afford to move themselves to the northern cities at this time, but several factory owners helped them move for their work. “African American women, who faced discrimination due to both their race and gender, found a few job opportunities in the garment industry or laundries, but were more often employed as maids and domestic servants” (Corbett et al., 2014). Even with all the racial hatred and segregation, African Americans did earn more money in the North than they did in the South, which helped to lead then to the North. With all the things pulling them towards the North, African Americans continued to struggle with excessive amounts of racial hate and discrimination in the North. This was something that they hoped they wouldn’t have to deal with when moving to the North but it was something that they clearly could not get away from, unfortunately. According to Corbett et al. (2014), the main force driving them to the North was greater education opportunities and more expansive freedoms. They felt as if these few positives outweighed the negatives that they faced.
The immigrants from Europe had different paths for immigration. The immigrants from Northern and Western Europe usually had money and moved to the U.S. to the western territories that were already settled and established. It was a different story for the Southern and Eastern immigrants who were leaving to escape very treacherous conditions with religious, political and racial discrimination. Another reason that they desired to migrate was the need for consistent work with pay.
These migrants came over with almost nothing and were forced to stay in the towns that they had arrived in. “By 1890, over 80 percent of the population of New York would be either foreign-born or children of foreign-born parentage” (Corbett et al., 2014). Between 1900-1910 over 9 million people migrated to the United States, most of them coming through Ellis Island. Immigrants tried to find groups of people from their own countries to be able to settle with, which is where cities like “Little Italy” and “Chinatown” became known. According to Corbett et al. (2014), these migrants had darker skin, spoke different languages, ordered different types of food, practiced different religions and acted differently with made them a target for racial hate and discrimination. Due to the Americans being frustrated with the immigration situation and loathing these immigrants, they formed something called the “American Protective Association”. This association was created to deter immigration into the United States. Corbett et al. (2014) states, “successfully lobbied Congress to adopt both an English language literacy test for immigrants, which eventually passed in 1917, and the Chinese Exclusion Act”. This furthered the segregation and racism to all different races and religions. People felt as if they were not wanted in the United States and the Americans did not want them there.
There were many reformers that came about in the 1900’s to try to advocate and pave a new way for immigrants. Many organizations were created for African Americans, such as the National Association of Colored Women. The Niagara Movement was developed in 1905 and its mission was to fight racial inequality according to Lewis (2020). They also came out with African American newspapers to expose the racism and hate in the country. Although they fought hard for equality, the discrimination did not end immediately. They did succeed in some areas though as the NAACP and many other organizations were created to support the African Americans, which led to big changed for them in the future. While it did not take any immediate actions, I do feel as if they were successful
