In the contemporary healthcare sector, health education and health promotion go in handy. By educating individuals on health facts, nurses enhance their ability to make informed healthcare decisions and take control of their health (Whitehead, 2018). The health education process is an initiative by governments, non-governmental agencies, and medical services donors to educate and create awareness amongst individuals in a country to maintain health standards and encourage them to visit the doctors and hospitals in case of ill health. Many individuals often succumb or develop severe health conditions due to ignorance about their health status and the community’s available services. Thus, health education plays a vital role in community healthcare through helping promote individuals’ health standards by creating awareness regarding disease outbreaks, empowering individuals to make informed decisions regarding personal health, and informing individuals about healthy eating habits (Sharma, 2016). Moreover, it tells the individual about the health dangers of drug and substance abuse. Health education plays a crucial role in health promotion because it enables individuals to gain increased control and improve their health.
Drug and substance abuse among youth is a contemporary issue that a family may experience today. The problem of drug and substance abuse leads to high rates of juvenile delinquency hence creating the need to educate the youths about the dangers of using drugs and substances (Liddell & Burnette, 2017). Mitigating drug and substance abuse among the youth is essential in breaking the chain of abuse into adulthood; therefore, all individuals should play their roles towards this course. To address this issue, a nurse may collaborate with the interested groups and local government to organize youth forums, healthcare talks, and career talks to change the views among the youths in the community.
