Purpose of Assignment:
The purpose of this assignment is to analyze a new family’s situation and design a plan to support their child through their transition to your program.
Course Competency:
· Analyze biological, environmental, cultural, and genetic risk factors for families of children with exceptional needs
Instructions:
Choose one of the three provided scenarios. Analyze the situation and, using content from this course and your previous course work, design a plan for supporting the child through their transition to your program.
Scenarios:
1. You are an educator in a large childcare center and a new family is starting in your program. Aman is four years old and is an ELL. His family recently immigrated to the US from the Middle East. His father is an interpreter for the military. His mother does not speak English well, preferring to speak Farsi. He has one younger sibling. His family is eager for him to learn English before he starts public school.
1. You own a family childcare (in-home childcare) and a new family is starting in your program. Nora is a nine-month-old infant. Her mother, Karlene, is a teen parent who is starting college to earn a degree. They live with Karlene’s mother, who is also a single parent. Nora has not mastered sitting independently and has spent much of her time in her car seat, bouncer seat or swing.
1. You are an educator in a small childcare center and a new family is starting in your program. Kingston is an 18-month-old toddler who was born with prematurely with a low-birth weight. His mother and father were both drug users prior to his birth. He is now in the custody of his grandparents who are his legal guardians. Kingston shows signs of developmental delays and mild aggressive behavior.
1. Content:
a. Outline your chosen scenario and explain the factors that place this child at risk for special or exceptional needs. Include one reference to support your explanation.
b. Design 10 welcome interview questions based on their particular situation. Your goal is to learn more about their child and family.
c. Determine 2 resources (1 articles and 1 web resources) you can share with the family to provide support for their child. Provide an annotated bibliography entry for each resource.
d. Determine 4 resources (2 written and 2 web resource) you will want to share with your colleagues to support their understanding of the child’s circumstances. Provide an annotated bibliography entry for each resource.
e. Design 3 developmentally appropriate goals for the child to support their unique learning needs in your program in the scenario.
f. Establish a follow-up plan for ongoing intervention and support describing ongoing communication between program and family. Include one reference to support your plans.
