Health and Medical Discussion Essay Assignment
Why is it important for nurses to commit to lifelong learning in relation to patients, organizations, and self?
Lifelong learning in nursing can be described as a qualitative indicator in the health discipline, as it can improve the knowledge and skills of nurses who practice it (Lera et al., 2020). In relation to patients, organizations, and the self, committing to lifelong learning as a nurse is important because it allows for nursing knowledge and skills to continue growing with the goal being to provide higher quality care. This form of learning can provide nurses with better insight into themselves as a professional health advocate who is aware of the rapidly changing dynamics of healthcare, which can also benefit the patient.
How can organizations such as Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) assist nurses in their lifelong learning journey?
Organizations such as STTI can assist nurses in their lifelong learning journey by providing them with the resources that are needed to facilitate lifelong learning. Because of the hectic nature of nursing, it may be difficult for nurses to stop and research about new policies and advancements in healthcare that may benefit their skill development, which is something that STTI is encouraging for more nurses to do. Lifelong learning is valuable, and STTI is helping nurses to understand that.

Why is it important for nurses to commit to lifelong learning in relation to patients, organizations, and self?
I think it is important for nurses to commit to lifelong learning because I feel as if everyday there is something to learn in nursing. Everytime there are new rules or techniques in nursing. Nurses can develop the critical-thinking and problem-solving abilities they need to overcome challenges that arise while caring for patients through lifelong learning.Nurses who stay current on new techniques, regulations, and procedures have the potential to affect healthcare in a variety of ways. I also feel as in the medical field you never stop learning. For example, in a mental health setting, for the formation and development of high-quality therapeutic connections with patients, mental health nurses must be aware of the need for personal self-awareness and emotional management of empathy (Moreno-Poyato, 2021). Nurses are able to provide individual care to the patient depending on the patient’s need. Nurses don’t get to choose or pick their patients, we need to adjust to working with different cultures. Being up to date with new rules and new information is essential, therefore when a nurse renews their nursing license they have to provide proof that they have been doing continuing education hours.
How can organizations such as Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) assist nurses in their lifelong learning journey?
Some of the goals for Sigma Theta Tau improve care and goals for patient care. Sigma membership gives nurses and nursing students access to a variety of research and information, as well as opportunities for continuing education, leadership development, and networking. It also claims to help students with academic excellence.
