When rationing care, the medical community should prioritize patients
Description
Due to a lack of resources, doctors in some countries were forced to choose who received treatment and who did not during the coronavirus pandemic. Doctors in other countries, including our own, have reported being told to plan for this eventuality. When it comes to rationing care, there are guidelines in the medical community for prioritizing patients.
These are largely determined by who is most likely to survive, particularly in terms of who receives a ventilator. However, making that decision is not always simple. In addition, when hospitals are overburdened with patients, there may be several who have similar survival chances. So, how should the choice be made? Dr. Robert Klitzman writes in this article that now is the time to start talking about how to prioritize some patients over others:
In the COVID-19 crisis, how will hospitals decide who lives and who dies? However, not everyone agrees that this debate should take place. Dr. Morhaf Al Achkar contends that no policy should be in place that normalizes prioritizing one life over another or that could be used to justify making this appear acceptable. Here’s the link to his article: Choosing who will live and who will die For this assignment, carefully read both articles and then respond to the following questions:
1. What is the main point made by Dr. Klitzman in his article?
2. What are three criteria that Dr. Klitzman believes should be used when rationing care to prioritize some patients over others?
3. How and by whom, according to Dr. Klitzman, should these decisions be made? Why?
4. What is the main point made by Dr. Al Achkar in his article?
5. What are three reasons given by Dr. Al Achkar why we should not write a policy that prioritizes certain patients over others?
6. Do you agree with Dr. Klitzman or Dr. Al Achkar more than the other? Give an explanation for your response.
