a question about social science writing
You will investigate the political and public health aspects of your community for this essay.
To do so, look through various sources such as social media and local news for specific examples of what your community or state government did to address public health concerns related to the pandemic, as well as what plan your community or state government put in place to reopen the economy after a few months. You should look through numerous feeds such as Twitter, Instagram, and even Facebook (although younger people don’t use Facebook as much as older individuals who manage municipalities and organizations do). Most communities have a small local newspaper that uses social media and usually has a website with content to read. Larger publications, such as the Hartford Courant or the New Haven Register, should also be checked (you may need an account to read more than just a few stories). Prepare to comb through these resources all the way back to February or March 2020.
BE CAREFUL AND BASE YOUR ANALYSIS ON RELIABLE INFORMATION SOURCES.
You will be more likely to come across sources that are not based on scientific data while collecting data for this module. Remember, states just need a rational and reasonable basis to feel that opening the economy too early or too soon poses a public health concern. Many news outlets and social media platforms base their opinions on false claims and/or conspiracy theories. This is why it’s critical to rely on trustworthy sources of information.
Look for examples of what the state or local government did to control the outbreak in that area and what the state or local government did to reopen the economy as you search through social media and local news. This isn’t a vote on the policy; it’s merely a review of what was done, not a judgment on whether or not it was a good decision.
This lesson focuses on the role of municipal or state governments in preventing the pandemic from spreading further. It does not go into detail into the economics of those decisions. This will be covered in the following module.
The following should be included in your essay:
A reminder of your community’s name.
A reminder of your community’s demographics (you can use the same demographics data from the last essay unless I suggested you make some changes).
The state or local government’s plan to contain the outbreak.
The state’s or local government’s plan to restart the economy.
Examples of how certain strategies have worked in the past.
Your preliminary appraisal of the proposals’ consequences.
