Description
Module 4 Assessment
Ageism in Patient Care
TOTAL POSSIBLE MARKS: 10
Ageism involves both negative attitudes and behaviour toward groups of people based on chronological age (Funk, 2016). Attitudes and beliefs about older persons are reinforced by stereotypes which are commonly reflected in the media. For example, older persons are often portrayed as forgetful, resistant to change, bad drivers, and unhappy. Negative attitudes toward older persons can be detrimental as they can lead to negative behaviour or discrimination. In this assessment you will explore ageism in the healthcare setting by drafting a memo to long term care administrators addressing ageism in patient care.
Learning Objectives:
Describe ageism.
Explore how ageism may occur in caring for older persons.
Discuss the effect of ageism in patient care on older persons.
Evidence the effect of ageism on older persons using academic research.
Identify how ageism in patient care could be addressed.
Instructions:
Draft a 1-page memo (not including title page or reference page) to long term care administrators addressing ageism in patient care. In the memo:
Describe ageism and how it may present itself through patient care in long term care facilities.
What are the effects of ageism on older persons? Why should ageism in patient care be addressed?
Using the Bow Valley College RGO Library Database, search for 1 academic peer reviewed journal article that addresses the effect of ageism in patient care on older persons (2010 to present). Use the research findings from the article to support why ageism in patient care should be addressed.
Suggest one way that ageism in patient care could be reduced.
To help you with this assessment read the following resources:
A. Textbook Reading: Chapter 2 (p.36-50) “Population Aging, Ageism, and Intergenerational Relations” (Funk, 2016)
B. How to Find Scholarly Peer-Reviewed Journal Articles. View the Library & Learning Commons site to learn about academic peer-reviewed sources and how to search for them http://bowvalleycollege.libguides.com/scholarly-articles
Guidelines:
Memos should not exceed 1 page in length (not including title and reference page).
APA formatting, citing, and referencing guidelines must be followed.
Assessments missing a reference list or in-text citations will not be graded. All assignments will be checked to ensure academic honesty.
Create a MS Word Document (.doc or .docx) and upload to the Module 4 Assessment dropbox in D2L by the due date. Assignments submitted late will be subject to a five percent reduction of the total grade for every day past the due date, including weekends (e.g., if the assignment is three days late, 3 X 5% = 15% will be deducted resulting in a maximum letter grade of A). Assignments more than seven calendar days past the due date, without written approval for extension, will receive a grade of zero (0).
