Description
Keep a log for four weeks of the semester and record on a daily basis everything that you throw out and everything that you reused and or recycled minus any personal hygiene items. I do not wish to know about these items, i.e., dental floss, deodorant, etc.
Make a list of what you either recycled, placed in the trash or reused.
If you are not sure if an item can be recycled, please ask someone or myself this is how you learn. For example, there are no current program at Rutgers to recycle Styrofoam food containers. The goal of the exercise is for you to become very aware of your own personal environmental footprint from a trash/recycling perspective and to make changes to lessen that impact.
As you go through the exercise evaluate your log and see if you can and or willing to make changes to conserve and recycle as opposed to disposing/wasting resources.
When you have your raw data, you will then need to chart/graph and analyze in order to see your actual amount of resources you are using and where they end up, i.e., the items you used and placed in the trash or recycled, and the % if any on the items you cut back on.
I suggest that you track and graphs out your data using excel, i.e. in the form of bar graphs or pie charts etc.
In addition, you will need to compare your first two weeks of data against the last two weeks and graph out i.e., pie chart, as well as discuss your observations.
You will also need an overall pie chart showing a break down in percents of total items reused, recycled, and thrown in the trash.
For the written portion you will need at least three paragraphs of your reflection and observations of the assignment and what you learned and any changes you made, etc.
Examples: you realized you were throwing out 10 pairs of plastic food utensils a week, so you bought a real pair of utensil and you washed them after each meal. You stopped using bottled water and refilled a container etc.
Look at the data and see what changes you can make to green up.
