Analysis of Federal Election Platforms Discussion
This assignment asks you to use the concepts and historical material from this course to compare and contrast the energy and environment policy proposals of two of the four major political parties (Conservatives, Liberals, NDP or Green).
Our expectation is that you:
Demonstrate that you have read and understood the primary source document (i.e. the party platform or climate plan) and are able to identify key elements.
Can apply material from the course’s required readings to analyze these proposals and contextualize them within the broader political and historical context.
Demonstrate that you have researched platform analyses performed by academics and/or media during the campaign.
Can identify the ideas, institutions and interests represented by these competing policy packages.
Can make an informed assessment as to which party platform you think is better and why. You should be clear on the criteria you are using to make this assessment (e.g. ambition, practicality, political acceptability, detailed implementation plan….).
You should feel free to use tables or other tools to present the content of the party proposals, but your argument as to which is better should be in essay format. This assignment should be no more than 2000 words and is due by midnight on October 23.
