Analytical Review of the Ghost Story and Filmography
filmography This course’s first formal assignment is to create a filmography. This filmography will focus on the films that have had the greatest impact on your life and have left a lasting impression on you for whatever reason. You will compile a list of 10 to 15 films and make brief observations about their appeal and characters. Please be as precise as possible when organizing this filmography as you would an annotated bibliography for any other class.
Make a citation in the Modern Language Association (MLA) format at the start of each entry in your filmography. List each film in order of its release date (in italics). Include the director’s name, the distributor’s name, and the year of release. List the names of the performers after the director’s name, if applicable. To start this list, use the abbreviation perf. Finish the entry with the appropriate publication medium (e.g. DVD, VHS, Laser disc). All material in each entry should be double-spaced:
Ed Wood is a well-known author. Tim Burton directed the film. Johnny Depp, Martin Landau, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Patricia Arquette star in this film. Touchstone Pictures, 1994. DVD.
The annotation that follows the citation should be no more than 2-3 lines long, but you are free to write more if you wish. The following questions should be addressed and answered in each annotation:
What is the movie’s genre?
What about the movie struck a chord with you? (Take, for example, acting, plot, setting, art design, dialogue, and so on.)
What makes the character(s) noteworthy or memorable?
Your annotations can be short and to-the-point. Allow them to capture the essence of your feelings about the films and characters in your own voice. At the end of the day, each entry should provide information that is clear, accurate, and unique to your own viewing experience. When you’ve finished your list, alphabetize it by title and you’re done! You have your personal filmography, which should reveal as much about you as it does about your film and character preferences.
