ART104 A Clown Became Suspicious of Your Closet
Let’s take our inspiration from Luis Buñuel’s surreal films this week: his oneiric collaboration with Salvador Dalí, Un Chien Andalou (An Andalusian Dog), and his later satire, El ángel exterminador (The Exterminating Angel).
This week, you will write a surreal story and then each student will imagine a short film based on another student’s story. Like the surrealists, we will try to get out of our conscious minds and tap into our subconscious. We will throw off the chains of logic and relinquish the comfort of control to a glimmer of liberation in artistic anarchy.
Discussion post: Write a 6-sentence “What-If Story” in the style of the surrealists.
Use the “What-If Genie” to select a surreal story prompt. (I closed my eyes and clicked through a few to randomly select a prompt).
Sentence 1: Introduce the main character.
Sentence 2: Describe the main character’s goal.
Sentence 3: Describe an action by the main character in relation to the goal.
Sentence 4: Describe an obstacle in relation to the goal.
Sentence 5: Describe the main character’s response to the obstacle.
Sentence 6: End the story.
Respond to another student by translating their story into a short film (choose someone whose story hasn’t been translated yet):
Describe each sentence as one shot in a surreal film. Be creative! Include the following:
Elements of cinematography.
Elements of mise-en-scène.
Elements of editing.
Elements of sound.
If you’re stuck, here is my example (I translated my own story, so it’s on the literal side. But you will translate another student’s story, so you can let your mind wander without the encumbrance of preexisting ideas.)

This discussion works toward the following learning outcomes:
1) Collaborate with others to deepen visual literacy and interpretive skills.
2) Engage effectively with films from a variety of cultures and eras.
3) Relate issues in cinema studies to other areas of humanistic study.
4) Define and describe the components and meaning of mise-en-scène.
5) Describe the components and methods of cinematography, editing, and sound.
