Part 1: Great Depression. Read President Herbert Hoovers explanation of the Depression and respond to the questions in the chart below. The document can be found at the website https://multimedialearning.org/FreeDownloads/2012/HooverLetter-QA.pdf.
Why do you think Hoover wants to keep this letter secret from the American people?
Summarize very briefly each of the 5 periods Hoover mentions.
What does Hoover believe the people fear?
What suggestion does Hoover make for the new incoming president?
What is the major ingredient needed, in HHs opinion, for the nation to turn itself around?
Part 2: World War II (1941-1945). In the box below CREATE a Timeline (you will have to be creative) of the United States entry into World War II. Focus on such things as the desire to maintain neutrality, the inability to maintain that neutrality, and the ways in which the United States helped Europe win the war against Hitler and the Nazis.
Part 3: Orson Welles and the War of the Worlds. Read about the October 1938 radio program that scared people all around the world (https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/welles-scares-nation) and, if you are willing to do so, watch the Tom Cruise film War of the Worlds (2005) to respond to the following questions.
Why did Welless war of the Worlds broadcast create so much panic and hysteria?
Outside of the United States, where there any countries or cities that underwent the same hysteria? Was it worse? Were there differences? Do you think level of education has anything to do with this?
Can Welles cab held responsible for the hysteria that followed the airing of the radio program?
Do the media (social and otherwise) today hold as much power and influence as did radio in the 1930s? Do you think an audience today would be as likely to react with panic and hysteria is a similar program were aired today? Do films like Tom Cruises 2005 Wars of the World play any role? Elaborate your response.
Draw a picture of what you think an extraterrestrial might look like. ? This is obviously just for fun, so be creative.
Part 4: The Atomic Bomb: Hiroshima and Nagasaki. You are a survivor of the bombing of Japan in 1945(either Hiroshima or Nagasaki) and you decided that 20 years after the event you want to write a letter to the United States either in support or against that bombing. The letter should be 500 words minimum. Be specific and know that some of what you write might have to be graphic, but factual. You might want to refer to John Herseys Hiroshima as a reference.
