Assignment: Diagnostic Discussion Essay
Go for a 20- to 30-minute walk by yourself. Put on a mask. Bring no notebooks, cell phones, headphones, cameras, or other electronic devices. It should not be planned ahead of time or combined with other tasks (working, walking the dog, grocery shopping, etc). Avoid conversing or interacting with other people.
You can start it wherever you want. Allow color to serve as your guide. Allow yourself to become color-sensitive in your environment. Try to imagine a color story or a narrative in your head as you walk.
What colors do you gravitate toward first?
Which ones take longer to reveal themselves to you?
What colors do you notice that are out of the ordinary?
What are the color relationships that you’ve noticed?
Is it true that colors appear to shift over time?
Return to class as soon as you get home and jot down as many notes as you can about these questions.
Reflect on these questions as they apply in a two-page, double-spaced reflection on your journey. Include your thoughts on the experience as well as what you learned from it. What surprised you the most? Include a reflection on what it was like to walk at this time without any devices or other tasks to divert your attention away from the walk.
