Observing Toddler Development is an example of an application. You practiced your observation skills in EDUC 4205, Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Infant Settings. Because observation is such an important part of evaluation and planning, you’ll have the chance to hone your skills by observing in a toddler setting. Keep in mind that objectivity is crucial. Try to put yourself in the shoes of individual children, and remember that you’re seeing toddlers and their teachers at a
specific moment in time, with no knowledge of the child’s background or previous experiences in the environment. You will concentrate on the four primary areas of development for this Application Assignment (physical, emotional, social, and
cognitive and language).
The purpose of this observation, like with Developmentally Appropriate Practice in Infant Settings, is not to assess the child’s overall development, but to practice your observation skills while learning more about key developmental areas
during toddlerhood. Complete the following steps to finish this application: Plan Schedule and confirm an observation day and time in a toddler setting for children aged 18 to 36 months.
As you study “Observe and Record” on pages 110-112 of the course material, consider what it means to be a successful observer in a toddler context. Think on what you’ve learned about the four primary development areas. In your course
material, look at pages 392-393 of Appendix A. The Week 2 Observation Worksheet, which can be seen below, should be printed and reviewed. Complete two Running Records (at least 10 minutes each) or three Anecdotal Records using this
