Assignment of business health and safety
Question 1 Question 1
As a human resources manager at an urban property management company, you have seen that your salary roll is growing among youthful personnel. Some of these are students, who help cover their living costs through part-time work in their apartment buildings as on-site superintendents, some are summer workers who are hired to cover additional outside maintenance and landscaping work in summer, and others are new permanent full-time hires in the recent growth in your company’s holdings. You are concerned that claims for injuries at work are increasing. When you interview many of these new, young workers, they often do not know their rights at work. Prepare a briefing note for your business boss, the Director of Company Operations describing the basic rights of workers, why it is crucial that workers understand them and how you can make your workforce, including young, short and part-time workers, more aware of those rights. (This is a simple memo, Limit 2 or shorter). For recommendations, you can use a list.
Elements of your replies
Short and simple briefing notes. They give decision makers the key information they need to deal with a problem. The purpose should be stated clearly. A summary should be provided.
The note should indicate the important issues that the decision maker must take into account. These should be included in a conclusion that can contain recommendations.
Question 2 1) Explain why a large chain of restaurants (e.g. McDonald’s, Mandarin, pizza from Boston) may pay the same premium as other large chain restaurants.
b) a lesser premium than other huge chains of restaurants.
c) a premium higher than other significant chains of restaurants.
What does theory of reinforcement tell us why employees are motivated or not to use personal protective equipment? (Consider the ABC model, and refer in your reply to OH&S today 10.1)
Describe and give an example at least one prevalent sort of changed work arrangement.
Question 3: Question
1) Difference between engineering controls and administrative controls, offering an example of how both can be used when employees are required to work outside the summer (e.g. road crew or roof crew).
2) List and offer examples of the three major categories of family-friendly initiatives organizations can undertake to prevent conflicts between the employment and family and help employees balance work and family duties.
Issue 4
1) Chris’s Halifax restaurant in Nova Scotia has just got an unsatisfactory assessment from the restaurant inspector of the Department of Agriculture. The investigation noted the following problems: unsanitary conditions in the kitchen, leaking cooling, unclean toilets, cross-contamination (e.g. cutting off raw meats and vegetable products without cleaning or replacing the cutting board/knife). In the last six months there have been a number of incidences of food poisoning (workers and customers). The bad evaluation of the restaurant was published on an internet page for current and new customers, thus Chris wishes to repair the problems as quickly as possible and remove the notice. Identify the form and kind of chemical and/or biological danger involved in each scenario.
Discuss what controls Chris should take to ensure that the next time around the restaurant the inspectors obtain a far more positive evaluation, with special attention to the new threats that might surface during the problem resolution.
2) Read OH&S Notebook 12.3, Incident Analysis, which identifies the human, situation or environmental aspects involved.
