Assignment on Intercultural Communication Dynamics
There appears to be chaos and conflict on many fronts in our world today, no matter where you look (or from what vantage point). For this discussion, we’ll look at issues in our society and how using effective communication skills/tools can help us resolve them or at the very least manage them better. As a result, I’d like you to:
1) Select a specific situation or incident that exemplifies the intercultural communication dynamics. The situation should center on a real-life event or series of events in which individuals or groups from various cultural backgrounds face a challenge, misunderstanding, problem, or clash of ideas or positions, with cultural differences playing a key role. Personal experience, news articles, media documentaries, and published case studies can all contribute to the situation.
Health care reform, Black Lives Matter, transgender equality, gun control, environmental protection, euthanasia, prison system reform, systemic racism, and other issues are examples of situations.
(2) Describe both sides of the argument, including the viewpoints of those involved. Also, explain the events that have occurred up to this point in a concise manner. You are not expressing an opinion on the topic here; rather, you are providing information to your audience (your fellow classmates).
(3) Apply Intercultural Communication theory and research to the situation. Choose two communication terms that you believe are important for understanding the situation, and make recommendations for how the situation could be managed and/or resolved productively if the parties used these effective communication methods. As a result, I’d like you to incorporate these terms into your description of how the two sides might see things more clearly.
Past Exam Review sheets are a good place to look for your two terms.
For this post, I’m looking for about 2-3 good paragraphs. Here’s an illustration:
If I were to choose abortion as my topic, I would begin by explaining both pro-life and pro-choice viewpoints, mentioning Roe vs. Wade, possibly past events involving Planned Parenthood, and any new legislation being proposed (at the state or federal level). After that, I’ll explain how my two chosen terms – Individualistic Culture and Empathy – can be used to help the two sides better understand each other. I’d write about America’s Individualistic Culture and how women believe they have a right to control their own bodies. I’d write about having empathy for both the unborn child and the mothers who have abortions (looking at how they are emotionally affected by the experience). I’m thinking about throwing in some science and spiritual observations as well. When you get to the part of your post where you recommend or solve a problem based on communication theory, it’s appropriate to throw in a personal opinion (as you most likely will lean to one side or another).
Abortion, same-sex marriage, and the death penalty are prohibited topics. Let’s come up with some new topics to talk about!
