Assignment on Symbolism in Poetry
Respond to the following prompt after reading Chapters 15-17:
Prompt: Write a paragraph about each of the poems about roses (pages 887-889) to show how each develops distinct symbolism for the rose. What conclusions may you derive about the rose’s traditional poetic meanings? Find more poems about roses outside of this textbook if you can to see if your generalizations still hold true.
Your submissions will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
Writing paragraphs that are well-developed and related to the prompt(s) (minimum 300 words).
Make sure your thesis is clear and backed up with one or two quotes from the literature.
Do not use the first or second person in your writing.
Responding to two classmates with meaningful comments of at least 30 words (do not just write) “I concur. What you’ve written appeals to me “(
Standard English rules are followed. Please double-check your work before hitting the “submit” button!
When you use a quotation from the literature in your mini-essay, make sure to include an in-text citation (also known as a parenthetical citation) just after you close the quotation marks and before you complete your sentence with a period. If necessary, anyone in the class (including myself!) can quickly locate the quotation in the literature. If you’re unsure what to put inside the parenthesis, consult Chapter 34 of the textbook, “Quotation, Citation, and Documentation.”
There must be a Works Cited list at the bottom of your post if you use in-text citations.
When inserting quotations, remember to use the “Quote Sandwich.”
“One Perfect Rose” by Dorothy Parker
Since we met, he’s only sent me one flow’r.
He chose one beautiful rose as his messenger; deep-hearted, pure, with perfumed dew still wet
“My fragile leaves,” it murmured, “his heart enclose,” I understood the floweret’s language.
For his amulet, love had lasted a long time.
One flawless rose.
Do you know why no one has ever sent me a one-of-a-kind limousine?
No, it’s just my luck that I always get One beautiful rose.
The Ill-Fated Rose
WILLIAM BLAKEO BY WILLIAM BLAKEO Rose, you’re sick.
The unseen worm that flies through the night in the midst of a screaming storm:
Has discovered thy bed of crimson bliss, and his dark secret love is destroying thy life.
