1. How does the speaker engage the audience? Joe Smith engages the audience by showing the audience and giving his audience the demonstration of the different paper towels. “There’s the tri-fold. People typically take two or three. There’s the one that cuts it, that you have to tear off. People go one, two, three tear. This much right? There’s the one that cuts itself. People go, one, two, three four. Or there’s the same thing, but recycled paper, you have to get five of those because they’re not as absorbent, of course. The fact is, you can do it all with one towel. Another way he engaged with his audience is by giving one side of the audience the word “shake,” and the other side of the audience gets the word “fold.” He asked the audience to say it louder and louder then he went to the other side of the audience. Also he has humor in his speech to keep his audience engaged.
2. What does he do effectively? What he does effectively is teach the audience how something is done. Which is by teaching the audience how to use less paper towels.
3. What do you think he could do that would be more effective? I thought Joe Smith presented to his audience how to use less paper towels. I think a way he could be more effective is by having the audience try it out themselves. For example, he has a bid table with 7 bucks of water with paper towels and the people line up and they try it. I think they would understand it better if they were able to do it.
4. How is this different than the format I am asking you to do in your demo speeches? The format of a demo speech does have it’s differences for example although the layout is similar it has it differences. For example, you have your intro, and when you go to your body the first one should have the understanding of importance, relevance, when this might be appropriate/useful. In the second section it should be about what you need, in your third you need the process (how to do it). In the format we’ve been doing you have three ideas you want to talk about in your presentation.

1. The speaker engages the audience by involving them in his demonstration by giving each side a word they have to repeat through out his speech. It would make me interested and also make me feel important because it would be like helping the speaker get his point through to the audience.
2. What he does effectively in his demonstration is he has his objects to help give his audience a visual of what he is talking about. His objects are a bowl of water, to represent a sink you would usually wash your hands with. He has various types of paper towels to show the different types you would get anywhere, not just paper towels from home. I found his speech very interesting and informative because I feel like he put so much thought and effort into it, even if it was about something sp basic, but it had to do with something we do everyday. At least, I hope we all wash our hands everyday!
3. I feel like he did a great job but something that would probably would have been more helpful was show where he got his information from. Maybe put a power point of the cites he researched. Also, he could have had different people up there with him to show that everyone could possibly do that method. Since everyone has different size hands and also different ways of washing and drying their hands.
4. His format is different because I feel like his speech is more memorized and also maybe coming up with new ideas as he speaks. He also does not cite his information, not saying that he is doing plagiarism, but maybe show us the proof of those numbers he gave to the audience. I genuinely enjoyed his speech, and I definitely will like to hear more speeches from him.
