Late book reviews will lose one letter grade for every day that they are late (but please communicate with me if you have a
legitimate reason for handing in a paper late). In the book review, you should focus on the book’s historical argument and how effectively the author used evidence to support the argument. The idea of a book review is not to repeat what the book says or describe it–that is a “book report.” Rather, a review analyzes the book and critiques it by examining the thesis and arguments.
Though you may briefly summarize the book’s contents, the book review should do much more than recap the book. You should focus on the book’s historical argument, use of evidence, contribution to the field, readability for its intended audience, and general usefulness. Read some sample reviews in the Troy University Library Database to get an idea of how this is done. Read
with a purpose. Here is a secret: you don’t have to read every word slowly and carefully. Preview the book by reading the Prefaces and skimming the chapter. Read a chapter at a time, focusing on arguments, not data. You might want to read the beginning and end of each chapter first to understand the main idea and then locate the sub arguments in the chapter. Do not take
copious notes. Rather, read to the end of the chapter, keeping your main questions in mind, and then write a brief summary or set of notes after you have finished a chapter. These are the questions you can ask as you read the book and write your review (but this not a template for the book review): What is the purpose and thesis of the book? Look at the Preface or Introduction to
find out what the author set out to do and why. How does the author make the argument? What is the author’s methodology? You should give a brief but thorough overview of the book’s argument, but DO NOT summarize the contents. What are the themes of the book? Look at the Table of Contents as well as the Introductory material to find out what key ideas and issues the author
addresses. What is the author’s point of view? Is there an unstated bias, or does the author clearly define the point of view or approach the book will take? Examine the thesis and arguments, as well as the handling of evidence, to see what that approach is. Here you also should consider the author’s credentials. What sources does the author use and how effectively does the book
use evidence to support arguments, and how does the author address counterevidence? Look particularly for primary source and archeological evidence. Who is the audience and how well does the author write in a style and with an organization that speaks to that audience? What structure, organization, and supporting aids does the book have that make it effective? Look at notes,
bibliography, maps, charts, diagrams, etc. In general, what are the major strengths and weaknesses of the book and its argument? Is the argument convincing and do the sources support the argument? How does it contribute to our knowledge of the period/topic, especially the Protestant and Catholic Reformations and the impact of the reformations on people, etc.
