INSTRUCTIONS
You’ve just been promoted to Health Services Manager at Three Mountains Regional Hospital, a small hospital in the Midwest’s mid-size city. Three Mountains is a 400-bed general medical and surgical facility. There were about 62,000 emergency visits and 15,000 admissions last year. There were over 6,000 outpatient surgeries and 10,000 inpatient surgeries performed. Three Mountains was recently in the news after employee emails were leaked that contained disparaging remarks about patients.
Many patients are hesitant to choose Three Mountains as their preferred hospital as a result of the data breach. Although the names of patients were not revealed as part of the improper dissemination of information, portions of their medical records were. The patient data was not presented in a positive light. Patients want to know that their information will be kept private when they share it with their healthcare providers.
You’ll make an educational brochure for patients about the contents of their medical records and how to release information properly. The following topics must be addressed in a double-sided brochure:
The Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Its definition and contents. Some of the Joint Commission’s requirements for what should be included in the medical record and when entries should be completed should be included.
HIPAA/Confidentiality: Give a brief overview of HIPAA and the level of confidentiality that Three Mountains Regional Hospital can provide.
Explain how a patient can obtain copies or sections of their medical records through the release of information process. Discuss the fact that information about them cannot be shared without their permission.
Create a privacy pledge statement that assures the patient that their information will be kept private.
You should make a tri-fold brochure with two pages for your project (the first for the outside and the second for the inside). Use well-placed art, an easy-to-read design, and color to draw attention to your brochure.
