Define successful persuasive communication in personal, professional, and academic settings.

You will write four paragraphs in this Competency Assessment explaining successful persuasive communication in personal, professional, and academic contexts. You must choose the most appropriate audience, manner of communication, and evidence to present your argument and persuade people to agree with you, regardless of the context.
Include at least one concrete example of effective persuasion from your own experience or production in each of the first three paragraphs to illustrate your views. Based on the ideas taught in the Module 1 reading, describe the example, identify the aspects of the rhetorical situation (audience, speaker, text, purpose, and context), and provide specific reasons why the example was effective. As you develop your analysis, you might incorporate information on tone, style, formality, voice, correctness, evidence, and word choice. The relationship between teamwork and persuasion will be discussed in the fourth paragraph.
In the first paragraph, give an example of good persuasive communication in a personal context, such as social media posts, emails to friends, or communications to your child’s teachers, and explain the factors to consider when communicating effectively in these contexts.
Describe an example of successful persuasive communication in a professional setting in the second paragraph. Describe an example of effective persuasive communication in an academic situation, such as a discussion board, assignment, or group presentation, in the third paragraph. Consider how academic persuasive writing differs from personal and professional writing in this paragraph.
Finally, in academic and professional settings, you will frequently be required to operate as part of a team. Discuss how you could influence others and communicate ideas successfully and ethically to others through collaboration and teamwork, including the tactics presented by Steven Johnson in his TED Talk “Where Good Ideas Come From.”
