Collaboration (Cross et al., 2016), empowerment (Argyris, 1998), and shared governance (Bernstein et al.) permeate management models of the early 21st century. Communication is the keystone that enables the types of interaction necessary for managing in these modes, but clear communications are fraught with assumptions (Cunliffe, 2014) and challenge managers in many ways (Mintzberg, 2013).
Answer one of these questions by locating a real-world example of organizations and their managers grappling with collaboration and communications. Choose credible news sources (not op-ed or opinion pieces). The discussion is divided into four threads. Post your example within the corresponding thread:
Find an example where collaboration and empowerment seem to be working in a traditional organizational structure. What are the distinguishing features of managerial communications in this example?
Find an example where collaboration, holacracy, and empowerment seem to be working. What are the distinguishing features of managerial communications in this example?
Find an example where collaboration and empowerment seem not to be working in a traditional organizational structure. What are the distinguishing features of managerial communications in this example?
Find an example where collaboration, holacracy, and empowerment seem not to be working. What are the distinguishing features of managerial communications in this example?
Use the “Takeaways” thread for your responses. In your response posts, based on your examination of at least one example of each of the four types (i.e., reference at least one post from each of the four threads), what are the common themes about organizational structure and communications? What is your advice to managers based on your informed analysis?
Reminder
When crafting the answers to these questions, please remember to integrate and cite the assigned materials. Consider bringing in additional support for your assertions. As you do, remember to both cite and reference them.
Be sure to make connections between the assigned materials and your ideas. Include a reference list at the end of your submission.
You don’t need to write a huge essay, but it should be 350-400 words long. Your replies to others should comment on new insights you gained in reading their essays, and how their ideas did or did not change your own viewpoint.
