Comparison Contrast Essay Assignment
Description
Assignment Requirements
The requirement for this assignment is that you write a comparison/contrast essay (see below), of about 750 words in length (it’s okay if it’s longer than this). This should be about something related to your topic for the semester. An explanation of “topic for the semester” is given in the instructions for the narrative writing assignment, and is repeated here, at the end.
About comparison/contrast: What you are practicing in writing this paper is simply comparing two things in terms of their similarities and/or differences. What features do they have in common (if any) and how are they different (if they are different)?
To begin with, choose two things. These need to be related to your topic. So, for example, if your story was about being profiled in a 7/11 store when you went in to buy a snack, then your topic for that paper was racial profiling. That’s what you are writing about in this course, and racial profiling is the topic for your comparison/contrast essay as well.
Example: If you wrote about being profiled you might take that experience, the actual one, as one thing, and then for the second thing, take another profiling incident, one that happened to you, or to a friend. Or you might compare the one profiling incident with how you are normally treated when you go shopping. Or compare and contrast the actual event with an ideal event, with the way you think the store clerk should have treated you, with how you would like to be treated.
In your paper, think about the reader: the reader needs specific details about the things you are comparing. These are most easily given in categories that are shared by the two, such as, if you are comparing treatment by clerks at convenience stores, details could include location (convenience stores), about what was said in each treatment (what was said would be another category); the way the clerk approached the customer (body language); what action was taken (a fourth category); and so on. The details might be the same, or they might contrast, or they might be different in one category or the same in another. The important thing is that the comparisons be in the same terms. You can compare the way two different store clerks talk but you wouldn’t compare the way one clerk talks with the way another one dresses.
There is an example of a comparison-contrast essay on your group discussion board.
Course Topic. As you know, the focus of this course is race. And in Workshop 1 during the first two weeks of the semester there was a lot of discussion of race. Your “topic for the semester” is the topic you will use for all the formal papers in the course. (Don’t worry that this will be repetitive because each paper has a different form and purpose so you won’t simply be writing the same paper over and over.) Your topic follows that first discussion in being related somehow to race issues. This doesn’t mean it has to be about something discussed explicitly in the workshop, but that discussion should give you a lot of ideas for a topic. But regardless of where you find the topic, it must be race-related.
