Writing Assignment #4 Instructions COVID-19 and Society This is the final writing assignment for this course! This paper is a reflection for the entire course and no additional references need to be included. Only the textbook is needed to complete this paper. You are responsible for reflecting on how each of the textbooks four sections is related to the topic of COVID-19. As you know by now, the COVID-19 pandemic is shaping up into a second wave with the potential to infect more than the first wave. Nations across the globe are beginning to take steps towards further lockdowns to enforce social distancing, as are many states here. However, Arizona is among the few to elect not to implement statewide measures such as mask mandates or closures of non-essential businesses. Your final paper assignment is to write a 3-5 page paper that takes for the form of an amicus brief or a position paper that is submitted during a legal or political hearing by someone with a strong interest, or expertise, on the subject. Your brief is to be a policy position paper on COVID-19 from the University of Arizonas School of Sociology. The position you take on the possibility of stricter COVID-19-related measures is up to you but frame it as either a) Arizona should have stricter restrictions, or b) Arizona should avoid stricter resitrictions. Please do not worry about the legal specifics this is not a law school paper! Instead, make your position based on what weve learned in class. For your brief, please address the following questions:
1) What is the social distribution of disease in the United States currently? (Part 1) a. Who is more likely to be at higher risk of exposure to COVID-19? b. How might this intersect with other health vulnerabilities? In other words, are folks with higher risks also likely to be sicker already?
2) Those with chronic conditions are more likely to make use of the healthcare system on a frequent basis. How does the experience of those with chronic conditions or disabilities differ than those without those conditions related to COVID-19? (Part 2)
3) How to Americans typically get healthcare and health insurance? (Part 3) a. How does this differ from other developed countries? b. How does the risk of exposure to COVID-19 and possible complications as a result of the disease relate to who has, and who does not have, health insurance?
4) What would be the impact of stricter COVID-19 policies on the profession of medicine? (Part 4) a. What elements of the healthcare system are most affected by the pandemic? b. What are the vulnerabilities in our healthcare system and what types of ethical questions should be asking of it related to COVID-19? Overall, think about devoting about a page to each of these major questions (1 through 4). There are no good yes or no answers but explain your reasoning for each of your answers for full credit.
