Guidelines for Critical Analysis (Golden Rice’)
1. First, read WTF Happened to Golden Rice? by Tom Philpott and The Deadly Opposition to Genetically Modified Food by Bjorn Lomborg. These essays make an argument for and against golden rice, respectively. Make an effort to grasp the main points of each essay’s argument.
2. Select one essay to summarize next. The first thing you should do is summarize the argument presented in the essay you’ve chosen. Before starting the summary, you might want to sketch an outline of the argument (identify the thesis and the reasons that support it). The most crucial purpose, in any case, is to summarize the case in your own terms! The length of your summary of the author’s argument should be one page.
3. Now give a quick assessment of the author’s reasoning. This is your opportunity to criticize the author by pointing out the flaws in his or her logic. What inconsistencies were you able to spot in the author’s arguments flow? What supporting evidence should be called into question without a doubt? If you understand the author’s situation, you should applaud him or her for pointing out the flaws that need to be corrected! Just make sure to reflect the argument objectively and show its legitimate flaws in both cases.
5. Devote at least one page to a critical analysis of the article’s reasoning. This will bring the critical analysis’ total length to two full pages.
6. Keep quotations to a bare minimum. You should paraphrase as much of the material offered in the book as feasible for a critical examination. Make an effort to present the concerns in your own words and terms. Of course, citations are required for paraphrase as well as direct quotations. To specify the pages you’re summarizing, use citations. Please follow the APA citation format for in-text citations (including pages numbers). If you absolutely must include a direct quotation, please do so with quotation marks and page numbers (APA in-text citation format) so that the reader can refer to it afterwards. Make sure to include a works cited page and a title page as well.
7. The project is due at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, March 30th. Good luck, and if you have any questions, please contact me.
